Description
The cashier at the Double-T Diner in Catonsville must be the owner's daughter. Like him, she has thick eyebrows and heavy-lidded dark eyes; they also share the same plump, short-fingered hands. I notice her every time we go there: She wears a small diamond pendant that hangs just above her generous cleavage, which is always uncovered. I imagine that, like me, she has read how v-neck tops can make a full face appear thinner. Her hair is colored dark brown to hide the gray that peeks through at her temples, the same place that the gray in my hair, which is dyed a brighter reddish-brown, reveals itself. Although I don't even know her name, I feel a kinship with her. It's quite possible that we have tried and failed at the same diets, bought and thrown away the same drugstore remedies that failed to clear our rough, blemished skin. We may even feel similarly baffled when we pick up a copy of Vogue or Elle in a waiting room, as though the magazine were in another language that we heard often as children but never learned to read. I don't know, and I would never ask her. But I feel a surge of sympathy when I see her. Here is someone else who makes an effort by wearing jewelry, flattering tops, lipstick; someone else whose effort does not quite pay off. I've wanted to catch her eye deliberately as she looks past me, her eyes grazing my forehead when she hands me my change, and tell her that I know that trick because I use it all the time myself. It's how women who know they are unattractive simulate eye contact with the rest of the world.
